The Scottish FA are poised to write to Hearts and Partick Thistle after the duo breached their articles of association by pursuing a £10million legal case against the SPFL.

The relegated pair have lodged joint papers at the Court of Session against the SPFL and Dundee United, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers - the three clubs who would benefit from their demotion.

Hearts and Thistle want to be reinstated to their respective leagues and have will pursue compensation of £8million and £2million respectively if they are relegated as a result of an SPFL resolution.

The relegations of Hearts, Partick Thistle and Stranraer have now been officially confirmed

Lurking in the background is a threat to seek an interdict to halt the start of the new Premiership season on August 1 - thereby threatening the new £125million broadcast deal with Sky Sports.

Article 99 of SFA rules state, however, that a 'member or an associated person must not take a football dispute to a court of law except with the prior approval of the Board.'

And Sportsmail understands Compliance Officer Claire Whyte is set to write to both clubs urging them to resolve their dispute with the SPFL rather than the SFA Tribunal system.

While there is limited appetite for further confrontation the rules state that any breach of the articles could be punishable by 'suspension' or even 'expulsion' stating: "A recognised football body, club, official,Team Official or other member of Team Staff, player, referee or other person under the jurisdiction of the SFA if found to have infringed the Articles shall be liable to censure or to a fine or to a suspension or to an expulsion or to ejection from the Challenge Cup Competition, to any combination of these penalties or such other penalty, condition or sanction as the Judicial Panel considers appropriate."
